Durbin Statement on STB Final Approval of Canadian National
Acquisition
[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) issued the following statement after the announcement that the Surface Transportation Board (STB) has given final approval of Canadian National Railroad's acquisition of the EJ&E.
"I am disappointed in the expedited process used by the STB under pressure from Canadian National. They rushed a decision - giving final approval on Christmas Eve - for a project that has untold negative consequences on communities in our region and on quality of life for affected residents.
"In its final decision, the STB requires formal oversight of the Canadian National acquisition for five years. Because Canadian National has continually shown that the best interests of our communities are not a priority, I hope the STB is serious about its oversight responsibilities. As this acquisition moves forward in the new year, I will continue to work with other members of the Illinois delegation to ensure that the safety of residents and travelers is the primary focus."
