United States Congressman Henry Cuellar - Representing the 28th District of Texas

U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar announced today $250,000 to study the feasibility of constructing a low water weir upstream from the World Trade Bridge on the Rio Grande River. The funds for the study were made available by language Congressman Cuellar added to the 2008 Omnibus Bill.

Once in operation, the weir, or low level dam, will provide water storage, increase water conservation, generate hydroelectric power and provide recreation for local residents. Additionally, instead of constructing a physical barrier, the weir will provide a natural boundary between the United States and Mexico.

“This is potentially a multi-million dollar investment for our community,” Congressman Cuellar said, “By addressing needs of energy, environment and border security, I am proud to announce these important funds for a more prosperous and secure community.”

The 1944 Water Treaty between the United States and Mexico allows for the construction of a third dam on the Rio Grande River. This third dam was identified to be constructed between the Falcon and Amistad Dams. 

Congressman Cuellar was joined by Laredo Mayor Raul Salinas and Commissioner Carlos Marin of the International Boundary Water Commission.
