Reid Announces Major Solar Grant for UNLV

Senator helped secure more than $700,000 for research for host university of National Clean Energy Summit

July 23, 2008

Washington, D.C. UNLV will receive $738,000 in grant funding from the Department of Energy (DOE) for important solar energy research, Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced.

The federal money will allow UNLV to perform solar nanotechnology research to identify methods for developing high-efficiency and low-cost solar cells. The benefits of this type of solar cell are well recognized, but the challenge is producing large arrays of them at low cost. The technology being developed at UNLV will help meet this challenge.

“I believe Nevada will lead a global clean energy revolution, and the great work being done at our universities will be a major part of this effort,” Reid said. “Our state is blessed with a tremendous amount of solar energy potential, and I am confident this project will take steps toward moving our country away from dirty fossil fuels and toward clean renewable energy.”

UNLV will also host the National Clean Energy Summit on August 19. The summit will bring together leaders from varied fields and backgrounds to discuss the future of clean energy in America, and how the next President and Congress can take action to rapidly develop these good ideas.
