BOUCHER ANNOUNCES FEDERAL FUNDING FOR
BLACKSBURG FIRE DEPARTMENT
$87,750 Federal
Grant Will Enable Purchase of Two Exhaust Removal Systems
(Washington, D.C.)
- U.S. Representative Rick Boucher
announced today that, at his urging, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security
is providing a federal grant in the amount of $87,750 to the Blacksburg Fire
Department. "This provision of
federal funding will enable the Blacksburg
Fire Department to equip its two fire stations with exhaust removal systems," Boucher
said.
With
the benefit of the federal funds, the Department will purchase two exhaust
removal systems, which will be installed in the Department's two fire stations.
The new systems will improve the safety of the Department's firefighters by
removing from the fire station the hazardous gases that form due to vehicle
exhaust. The two stations have not previously been equipped with exhaust
removal systems.
The Blacksburg
Fire Department provides fire protection to a 110 square mile area in Montgomery County including the Town of Blacksburg,
Virginia Tech and the surrounding areas. The Department is made up of 40
volunteer and 2 paid members.
"I am pleased that
the Department of Homeland Security has provided this funding to the Blacksburg Fire Department. It is important to ensure the safety of our
fire and rescue personnel, and today's announcement will help further this
goal," Boucher concluded.
