A Fight for Survival

Chairman Stephen M. Wolf was right on target when he wrote that we should tackle the global AIDS epidemic as a development and security issue. Of the 33 million people infected with the HIV virus worldwide, 23 million live Africa. The alarming rate at which this scourge is ravaging the continent demonstrarates that AIDS poses a very real threat to Africa's stability, development, and, it can be seaid without exaggertation, survival. President Clinton recently signed into law the bipartisan plan I wrote with my colleagues to create a $1.1 billion trust fund through the World Bank to fight AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. But much more remains to be done. US Airways is exactly the kind of private-sector partner we need to invest capital in life-saving research and proven prevention programs. In this time of unprecidented prosperity, we cannot afford to ignore this global crisis. Government and the private sector must join together to win this fight.
