College Corner
To the students of Massachusetts,
I wish you the best as you embark on your studies and a pivotal
chapter of life. My main advice for you about college is this:
Enjoy it. At Yale, though I took pride in my studies, I also
played a soccer, lacrosse, hockey, and fenced. College is the
time in life to explore yourself‐to
take some risks. Senior year, I took flying lessons in an old
T-34! Lastly, my word for the
young budding politicians and college youth is to be active. Get
involved. I remember my freshmen year, volunteering for Ted Kennedy's
first Senatorial campaign and leading protest and campus
dialogues in my years as president of Yale Political Union.
I ask you, as you go into your academic year, to remember that you can make a difference. You can do it without labels, but with the quality of your thinking that you'll learn here in Massachusetts. When we protested the war in college, some people didn't like what we were doing. But remember that Thomas Jefferson said that the highest form of patriotism is dissent. As college students, you have the power to bend history in the direction of change.
On this site you'll find a whirlwind of information about college, internships,
service, and how to get involved in the community. There's a little information
about a few of my favorite spots and things to do in Boston as well. Feel free
to look around. Take sometime to see what's going on at other schools. Find some
things of interest to you. My final words to you are to take pride in these precious
years, but again ‐ and
most importantly ‐ enjoy them. After all you only get to live these years once.
Congratulations! God Bless and welcome to the Bay State.
With Best Regards,
Senator John Kerry
Massachusetts is a state renowned for its higher education excellence, and I believe that the opportunities our colleges offer should be available for everyone who meets the academic requirements. Making college affordable for all is nothing less than an investment in the future of our Commonwealth and the future of our nation.
