Norton Christmas Party this Year Trumps Bad News Economy

December 16, 2008

Washington, D.C. -- In this year of a deep recession, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) is especially thankful to the businesses, organizations, and individuals who made donations to her annual Capitol Hill Christmas Party for Underprivileged Children in D.C.. "In the midst of the worst economy since the Great Depression, our party previews Christmas for kids, who might otherwise not see Christmas at all, with a special effort this year, complete with Santa Claus and all the trimmings," Norton said. About 250 District children will be welcomed to the annual Christmas party, held Wednesday, Dec. 17, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., room 345, Cannon House Office Building (Independence & New Jersey Avenues, S.E.).

Each child will receive at least one gift. Those scheduled to bring joy include Santa Claus, McGruff the Dog, provided by the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, the D.C. United Mascot, and the Thompson Elementary School Choir. Children invited are from organizations such as My Sister's Place, the United Planning Organization, Pediatric AIDS/HIV Care, Garrison Elementary School, and other organizations that provide services to youth. The children will receive toys, including popular hand-held games, and warm clothing, including fleece tops, and hats, scarves and gloves sets. U.S. Marine Toys for Tots Program contributed significantly. Norton's staff will work as Santa's elves serving a variety of foods that kids love.

The Christmas spirit of giving was not dampened by recession concerns. The price of toys increased significantly, but Norton's staff still was able to acquire enough toys for every child because of the generosity of donations. Norton is grateful to the businesses who contributed this year, including Chevy Chase Bank, Geico, and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Chartered Health, Washington Gas, D.C. United, LEAP LLC, and the individuals who will donate their money and/or time.
