BOUCHER AND GOODLATTE ANNOUNCE $29,000 FOR CITY OF COVINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT

Federal Grant Will Purchase New Police Cars for Police Department

            (Washington, D.C.) - U.S. Representatives Rick Boucher and Bob Goodlatte announced today that, at their urging, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, through its Rural Development agency, is providing a federal grant of $29,000 to the City of Covington to purchase new vehicles for its Police Department.

            "The federal funding announced today will improve the safety of Covington's police officers as well as Covington residents by providing up to date and safe vehicles for the Department," Boucher said.

            "Our local police officers are often the first responders in any number of different emergency situations," said Goodlatte. "These brave individuals battle difficult circumstances on a daily basis to ensure the safety of those in their local community.  I am confident that this grant money will significantly improve the safety of these courageous men and women, as well as the services which they provide to the community."

            The Rural Development Agency is providing $29,000 to the City of Covington for the purchase of two new, fully outfitted police cars. The new vehicles will replace older models currently in use by the Department which have high mileage and have become expensive to maintain.

            "I am pleased that the Rural Development Agency has provided this funding to the City of Covington for its Police Department.  It is important to ensure that our law enforcement personnel have access to the best equipment, and today's announcement will help further this goal," Boucher concluded.
