Ways and Means Welcomes Talented Group of New Members
Committee stands ready to meet the challenges and opportunities of the times

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House Democratic Caucus today approved the addition of five Democratic members to the Ways and Means Committee for the 111th Congress.  When the House convenes in January 2009, the Committee will welcome Representatives Danny Davis (D-IL), Bob Etheridge (D-NC), Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ), Brian Higgins (D-NY), and John Yarmuth (D-KY).  The ratio of majority and minority members on the panel will also shift to 26 and 15 respectively for the new Congress.

“I am very pleased to welcome such a talented, distinguished, and diverse group of Members to the Ways and Means Committee,” said Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles B. Rangel (D-NY).  “January 2009 will usher in a new, historic era in our nation and the Ways and Means Committee stands ready to meet the challenges and opportunities of these times.  We are eager to begin working on the critical issues of economic recovery including tax relief for middle class families and expanding access to reliable, affordable health care for all Americans.

“In the coming weeks, I look forward to continuing discussions with Committee Members, Congressional Leadership and President-elect Obama on these and other important policy matters so that we can move America in a New Direction,” said Chairman Rangel.  “These new members bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to this storied Committee and I eagerly await their contribution so that we can improve economic security for all Americans.”
