Academy Appointments PDF Print

Thank you for your interest in the United States Service Academies. The Military (West Point), Naval (Annapolis), Air Force, Merchant Marine and Coast Guard Academies are among the most sought after educational institutions in the country. Attendance at these prestigious Academies allows young men and women to obtain an undergraduate university degree while serving their country as members of the United States military. This honor is offered to only a few hundred cadets annually. The application process requires separate applications to a legal nominating authority and to the Academies themselves. In order to attend a Service Academy, students must concurrently request a nomination from their Representative, Senator, Vice President, or President and apply directly to the Academy of their choice at the same time. Please note that a nomination is not required for the Coast Guard Academy. Individual Representatives may have up to five cadets/midshipmen at each of the four academies at one time. For each vacancy, Representatives may nominate up to ten students. To obtain a congressional nomination, applicants must demonstrate academic strength, leadership ability, involvement in extracurricular activities and a desire to serve their country as a member of the United States military. The following criteria must also be met:
  1. The applicant must be at least 17 years old, but must not have passed his or her 23rd birthday as of July 1 of the year of entry into the academy; The applicant must be a United States citizen before July 1 of the year of entry into the academy; The applicant cannot be married or pregnant, and cannot have any legal obligations to support a child or other dependents; The applicant must have a minimum high school grade point average of 3.0; and
  2. The applicant must have competitive ACT/SAT scores.
It is very important for prospective applicants to challenge themselves by taking a rigorous program of college preparatory classes. Early preparation for the SAT and/or ACT is strongly recommended as these test scores are vital components of both the nomination and Academy applications. It is also advisable for applicants to participate in volunteer or other extracurricular work outside of school that will enhance their leadership ability.

Please complete, print out and mail the application below, available in both PDF and Word, to apply for a nomination from Congresswoman Tauscher. The deadline for 2008 is November 3. Please make sure to give your application enough time to arrive at our office by that date.
