SOLIS HONORS VETERANS FROM EAST LOS ANGELES AND THE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY

Los Angeles, Calif. -  Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (CA-32) hosted her 4th Annual Veterans Care Day Event at Belvedere Park in Los Angeles. The event was organized in collaboration with Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina.

“As a new generation of veterans return home from fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, we are reminded once again of the enormous sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform and their families,” said Congresswoman Solis. “Honoring our veterans must not be in words only; we must also ensure that they have access to quality health care, employment opportunities and other valuable services.”

Representatives from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Social Security Administration, the Internal Revenue Service, and other federal and local agencies were present to provide information about services, programs, and benefits available to veterans.  Free on-site medical examinations were also available.

Solis also presented military medals to three veterans, including Jesse Barajas (U.S. Army - Korean War) of Azusa, Carlos J. Leon (U.S. Army) East Los Angeles, and Jaime Quintanilla (U.S. Marine – Vietnam War) of El Monte.

"It is important to recognize both those who have worn the uniform and those currently serving,” said Congresswoman Solis. “Military families are struggling with extended stays, lack of mental health care, failure to provide bilingual services and lack of burial funds. They are keeping their commitment – we should keep ours.”

Congresswoman Solis has introduced legislation (H.R. 542) that would provide access to culturally and linguistically competent health care for our veterans with limited English proficiency (LEP). And, in 2003, legislation that was introduced by Solis to expedite the naturalization process for legal residents serving in the U.S. military was signed into law (Public Law 108-136).
