Fortenberry Legislation on Child Soldiers Becomes Law
Lincoln, NE - Congressman Jeff Fortenberry today thanked President Bush for signing into law the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008. Fortenberry led an initiative against the practice of child soldiers that became part of the legislation and was invited to attend the White House bill-signing ceremony.

Fortenberry Backs Solution to National Guard Benefit Discrepancy
Washington, DC - Congressman Jeff Fortenberry has joined with colleagues from Iowa and Minnesota in cosponsoring the Guaranteed Benefits for Our Troops Act. This legislation, H.R. 6723, would solve a discrepancy in respite leave benefit provisions affecting National Guard and Army Reserve soldiers under the Department of Defense’s Post Deployment and Mobilization Respite Absence (PDMRA) program.

Considering Adoption
A Nebraska family recently told me about an orphaned African child they were trying to adopt. The child was living in an orphanage in Uganda, his biological parents were dying of AIDS, and he had no one else left. This heartbreaking story moved the Nebraska family to act, start the process of adopting the child, and change his life forever by providing a good home.

A Veterans Day Message
Over the last few months, I have had the rare privilege of sharing the company of Nebraska’s “Greatest Generation” as they visited the World War II Memorial in Washington. The Heartland Honor Flight Network provides this opportunity for WW II veterans by organizing and funding chartered trips to the memorial built in their honor. But it seems it is those around them – the volunteers and officials who also participate in the visits – who feel most honored just to be in their presence.
