SOLAR TODAY magazine wins national awards

ASES' magazine wins 3 APEX Awards for publication excellence

BOULDER, 7/16/08 -- SOLAR TODAY, the magazine of the nonprofit the American Solar Energy Society, has received three 2008 APEX Awards for Publication Excellence. SOLAR TODAY was selected from among 4,479 entries in 11 major categories to honor outstanding publications in this 20th annual Awards for Publication Excellence program.

“These recent awards are further evidence of the high level of professionalism of our editorial team,” said Brad Collins, publisher of SOLAR TODAY and executive director of its parent organization, the American Solar Energy Society. “SOLAR TODAY continues its legacy of providing interesting, educational information to help raise the public's energy literacy. To continue to accomplish this mission in an award-winning way underscores the extraordinary talent of the SOLAR TODAY team.”

APEX 2008 awards were based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and the success of the entry -- in the opinion of the judges -- in achieving overall communications effectiveness and excellence.

The winning entries were --

  • The March/April 2008 cover, designed by Allison Gray and photographed by Dan Bihn, in the Design & Illustration – Covers category;
  • The January/February 2008 feature, “Advancing a Market for Zero-Energy Homes,” by Barbara C. Farhar, Ph.D., in the Technical Writing category; and
  • The September/October 2007 ASES National Solar Tour issue, including articles by most of the magazine’s regular contributors, in the Magazines & Journals – Print, Over 32 Pages category.

In 2007, art director Allison Gray won an APEX Award in Design and Layout for a SOLAR TODAY cover story on near-zero-energy home makeovers. That year the magazine also won an EXCEL Gold Award for its July/August 2006 issue. The EXCEL awards are given by the Society of National Association Publications.
