(Charleston) A design firm has been hired to assist with the Riverfront Park improvement project. The city has hired GAI Consultants, Inc. to offer their support on improving the park, amphitheatre and Kanawha Boulevard Streetscape.
The city has already received a Congressional earmark grant through U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd for $2.4 million for the improvements. The centerpiece of that project is a retractable canopy at the amphitheatre, which can be used for events during the summer months.
"We're in the process of doing the design right now. Once we have the design, we're looking at putting out construction contracts this spring," says City Manager David Molgaard.
The most optimistic plan is to have the canopy up and operational by the hottest months in the summer, but fall is probably the more reasonable timeline.
"Construction most likely will not take place until at least midsummer. Under the most optimistic timelines, potentially we would have the canopy constructed some time in June so that we can enjoy it during the sweltering months of August," explains Molgaard.
"If not, it will be likely September or October."
The design firm was approved during Monday’s city council meeting.
