MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER

This week, the House passed the Auto Industry Financing and Restructuring Act. This bill was designed to give automakers the time and space they need to reform their industry and return it to the competitive entity it once was. While we continue working through an already difficult economic crisis, the loss of this industry would be catastrophic to our nation’s recovery. For that reason, I am extremely disappointed that Senate Republicans chose to block consideration of this critical measure. With millions of Americans losing their jobs, homes, and healthcare, it is inconceivable for Republicans to prevent a short-term loan to an industry that employs 3 million Americans. President Bush should act immediately to save that which Congressional Republicans have deemed expendable.

On Wednesday, we marked the 60th anniversary of the General Assembly of the United Nations’ adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Tragically, one such place where the basic principles in this document are not upheld is Darfur. Together with 10 colleagues who traveled with me to Sudan last year, we sent President-elect Obama a series of recommendations on how we can work together to end this horrific conflict and restore peace and security to this troubled region. We look forward to working with the new President on this important effort.

Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
