Levin, Stabenow Announce Two New Veterans Centers to Open in Macomb and Oakland Counties

WASHINGTON – Senator Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Senator Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., announced today that the Department of Veterans Affairs will open two new community-based Vet Centers in Michigan. Located in Macomb and Oakland counties, these new centers will greatly increase local veterans’ access to a broad range of counseling, outreach and referral services.

“Our nation has a moral obligation to provide the highest quality health care to the men and women who put on our nation’s uniform,” Levin said. “Not only must we redouble our efforts to care for those who have already served in the military, but as a new generation of service members returns home from countries around the globe, we must ensure that they have access to the care and services they have earned.”

“This announcement is welcome news to the brave men and women who have made great sacrifices in defense of their country,” said Stabenow. “With the addition of these two veterans’ centers in Macomb in Oakland counties, we are continuing to uphold our promise to care for our veterans.”

The new Vet Centers in Macomb and Oakland counties are scheduled to open by the end of 2009. No specific locations have been announced yet. Michigan currently has five Vet Centers, located in Dearborn, Detroit, Escanaba, Grand Rapids and Saginaw that provide readjustment counseling and outreach services to any veteran who has served in a combat zone. The centers offer these same services to the family members of veterans.
