TO: Printing and Publishing Officials of the Federal Government

SUBJECT: Class Schedule for the Institute for Federal Printing and Publishing

The Government Printing Office's Institute for Federal Printing and Publishing sponsors courses designed to provide Federal employees with information they need in printing and publishing technology, systems, and processes. Three new courses are featured in 1997: Publishing Media, Resources for Publishing, and Scanning Black-and-White Photos for Desktop Publishing. Getting the Most from Desktop Publishing is being expanded to 3 days in 1997 to include more information in several areas including scanning and color. Following is the updated schedule for 1996 and the new schedule for 1997. Other courses may be added and adjustments may occur as needed.

January 9, 10, and 11, 1996. Washington, DC. Introduction to Printing Processes and Terminology is a basic overview of the printing processes including planning, desktop publishing, photography, electronic copy preparation, platemaking, paper and ink, presswork, binding and delivery. This is a beginning session for people with little or no knowledge of printing processes and terminology. The class includes a brief introduction to publishing on the Internet and other electronic means. It is a good introduction for other courses offered by the Institute; it is also a good review. The cost is $260.

January 12, 1996. Washington, DC. How to Fill Out SF-1 and Get the Products You Need is a hands-on session that emphasizes communicating clearly and completely; it addresses how to deal with unusual requirements and get the product you need. Those who have little or no knowledge of printing terminology should take Introduction to Printing Processes and Terminology prior to this class. The cost is $115.

January 23 and 24, 1996. San Francisco, California. CD-ROM Publication (Compact Disc- Read Only Memory) is a good publishing choice for some applications. The class offers a brief explanation of what a CD-ROM is and what it can and cannot do. Representatives from GPO's Graphic Systems Development Division discuss application of the technology to publishing needs and participants are offered up-to-date information on applications throughout Government and an introduction to the Special Interest Group for CD-ROM Applications and Technology (SIGCAT). The focus is on publishing a full-text data base; multimedia products are briefly discussed. Accommodations for the handicapped are also covered, and the course includes information about ordering CD-ROMs from the Government Printing Office. The cost is $195.

January 25 and 26, 1996. San Francisco, California. Introduction to Full-text Coding for Electronic Manuscript using SGML and HTML is an overview of Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and includes document analysis and automated coding methods. SGML and HTML concepts and creation of a document type definition (DTD) are discussed along with insertion of SGML and HTML tags. The basic tags used for the World Wide Web data found on the Internet, definition and creation of a "Home Page," and a retrieval engine that supports SGML constructs are covered. SGML and HTML are compared and relationships discussed. This is not a hands-on class; it is a shorter version of the hands-on class offered in Washington, DC. The cost is $195.

February 13 and 14, 1996. Washington, DC. Getting the Best from Desktop Publishing (DTP) deals with some of the printing considerations that must be kept in mind when using desktop publishing programs or systems to prepare materials for printing. It covers how to submit materials that can provide the printing you need. Some of the areas covered include fonts and font incompatibility, graphic file formats, trapping colors, and submission of information and visuals to accompany "electronic mechanicals." While the desktop publishing process will be explained, this is not a hands-on class in how to prepare copy or design on a particular program or system. It deals with software packages only as the information is relevant to the printing process. The focus is on ways the agency can get the best printed products from desktop produced material. Information is applicable to both PC and MAC users. The seminar assumes basic familiarity with desktop publishing and basic knowledge of printing. Those with little or no knowledge of printing terminology should take Introduction to Printing Processes and Terminology prior to this class. The cost is $195.

February 27, 28, and 29, 1996. Washington, DC. Orientation to GPO's Central Office Products and Services is intended to acquaint agency personnel with basic printing, publishing, procurement, and dissemination information. It provides a general orientation for anyone who needs to know GPO central office functions, processes, procedures, and services. A tour of the Government Printing Office is scheduled, and the course provides a means to establish and/or maintain lines of communication between and among attendees and instructors. Some knowledge of printing and publishing terminology is helpful. The cost is $235.

March 5, 6, and 7, 1996. Washington, DC. Introduction to Full-text Coding for Electronic Manuscript using SGML and HTML is an overview of Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and includes document analysis and automated coding methods. SGML and HTML concepts and creation of a document type definition (DTD) are discussed, and insertion of SGML and HTML tags is achieved at the PC workstations. The basic tags used for the World Wide Web data found on the Internet, definition and creation of a "Home Page," and a retrieval engine that supports SGML constructs are covered. SGML and HTML are compared and relationships discussed. Brief visits to a few Web sites on the Internet are included. PC workstations and hands-on classroom techniques are used to explore solutions to the general coding required to make data available for electronic dissemination on CD-ROM, the World Wide Web, and other media. Wordprocessor hard codes and conversion software techniques for direct usage with specific software retrieval programs are also covered. Knowledge of Windows and DOS systems is helpful. The cost is $550.
