Washington D.C. - Congressman Jeff Fortenberry voted against H.R. 3, a bill to expand taxpayer funding of human embryonic stem cell research. He addressed the United States House of Representatives today to express his concerns.
"I strongly support stem cell research using adult stem cells, which are showing real therapeutic value," Fortenberry said.
"Adult stem cells, derived from bone marrow and umbilical cord blood, are proving successful in the treatment of patients suffering from 72 diseases and conditions and avoid the ethically divisive issue of the destruction of an unborn human person, a human embryo. Embryonic stem cells currently show no therapeutic results for the treatment of diseases, and many taxpayers oppose the use of their funds for destructive embryonic stem cell research.
"With limited federal dollars, we should invest in proven research that can yield real hope. It is the right thing to do."
In a vote of 253 to 174, the measure with bi-partisan opposition passed.
