Fortenberry Supports Darfur Human Rights Act
Legislation Increases Sanctions for Human Rights Abuses

Washington D.C. - Congressman Jeff Fortenberry today voted for the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act of 2006. The legislation strengthens sanctions on individuals and governments responsible for the atrocities in the Darfur region of Sudan. It also authorizes additional funds for peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts in the region. Fortenberry said:

A decades-old civil war in Sudan is taking its toll on the nations most vulnerable. Conditions for those in Darfur are tragic -- the situation there has been called the worlds worst humanitarian crisis and genocide. The wanton violence and lawlessness that continues unabated must be stopped.

I co-sponsored the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act of 2006, H.R. 3127, because establishing stability and peace in Africa is an important goal.

As the crisis in Darfur has worsened, Ive worked diligently with my colleagues in Congress to raise awareness of and pursue a resolution to this catastrophic human tragedy. The United States continues to maintain severe economic sanctions on the Sudanese government.

This has been and will continue to be an important dialogue in the House International Relations Subcommittee on Africa, Global Human Rights and International Operations, on which I serve. We will continue to work for stability and peace in war torn lands where the rule of law has broken down.
