Fortenberry Secures $1.5M for Cancer Research
Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center will Lead the way in Early Detection

Washington D.C. - Congressman Jeff Fortenberry helped secure $1.5 million of funding for cancer research at the Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center (SNCC) in Lincoln. The funding is contained in the Department of Defense Appropriations bill passed by the House early this morning by a vote of 308-106.

This funding means cutting-edge cancer research right here in Lincoln, Fortenberry said. This research will contribute to a nationwide fight against cancer.

SNCC is Nebraskas leading independent cancer center, anticipating over 18,000 evaluations and treatments for patients from throughout the state in 2005.

This research expands our base of knowledge for the long term, Fortenberry said.

The focus of this research program will be to develop genetic signatures for the early detection and treatment of cancer through personalized molecular based therapies.

This proposal was deserving of my full support, and Im pleased that Congress has provided $1.5 million for such a worthy project in Lincoln, Fortenberry said.

These funds will enable SNCC to collaborate with the National Functional Genomics Center. Functional genomics may hold the key to vast advancements by enabling the development of specific treatment for each patient based upon the specific genetic characteristics of their malignancy.
