Immigration Reform Bill Increases Penalties for Illegal Activities

Washington D.C. - U.S. Congressman Jeff Fortenberry today supported the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005 (H.R. 4437). The bill establishes increased border security, an employment eligibility verification system, increases penalties for smuggling illegal immigrants into the country, and increases penalties for individuals who illegally re-enter the country. Fortenberry issued the following statement:

Uncontrolled borders and illegal aliens are serious national security issues that undermine legitimate and appropriate immigration policy, Fortenberry said. An important part of this legislation includes a two-pronged effort to tighten border controls and require employer verification of immigration status.

The bill passed by a vote of 239 to 182.
