Fortenberry Introduces Resolution to Expand Homestead National Monument of America's Boundaries

Washington, DC - Congressman Jeff Fortenberry recently introduced legislation that would expand the boundaries of the Homestead National Monument of America. The legislation would incorporate 140 acres of land purchased by the Friends of Homestead into the National Parks Service, as well as provide for the future purchase of an additional 160 acres from a willing seller. Fortenberry released the following statement:

“The Homestead National Monument is truly a gem of the Midwest, and a treasure for America,” Fortenberry said. “Its newest addition, the Heritage Center, will help educate and inspire Americans for years to come, shedding light on a truly remarkable passage in our nation’s history.”

“Nebraskans are rooted in the land, and the values of hard work, family life, neighbor helping neighbor, and personal responsibility are found most profoundly on the family farm. So it is a fitting honor for Nebraskans to help memorialize and celebrate the spirit of homesteading and its unique history, including recognition of the early Great Plains homesteaders as well as the first Americans, Native Americans. I am honored to help preserve and promote the story of the Homestead Act and its great significance to America’s growth as a nation.”
