House Approves Fortenberry Legislation on Lewis and Clark Initiative

Washington D.C. - The United States House of Representatives today passed an important measure for the ongoing development of the Lewis and Clark visitor center near Nebraska City. The House authorized the transfer of the center and nearly 80 acres of scenic wooded and prairie land from the National Park Service to the related non-profit foundation.

This is the culmination of nearly twenty years of work. The Center is a gem for Nebraska and a landmark for America, Fortenberry said. It is the only visitor center or museum in the United States to focus on the flora and fauna and scientific discoveries recorded by Lewis and Clark. The transfer fits with the long-range plans for the center, and I believe that it is the most cost-effective option for the Park Service saving approximately $50,000 annually.

Nancy Hoch, a member of the board of directors of the Center Foundation, stated, We are very grateful for Congressman Fortenberrys leadership and commitment in sponsoring and shepherding this important legislation through the House. It has been clear in his participation in the grand opening of the Plains Indian Earth Lodge and other visits that he views the Lewis and Clark Educational and Interpretive Center as a treasure for all of Nebraska. He has worked hard to make this legislation a reality.

The initiative is strongly supported by the entire Nebraska delegation.
