Veterans AffairsNow more than ever, our Veterans need to know their government stands behind them. Each day, the men and women of the Armed Forces selflessly put their lives on the line, and one of the strongest ways we can show our support for their service is to ensure they receive the highest quality care available and a lifetime of opportunity. After serving our country, they deserve nothing less.Congress has been involved with providing benefits to veterans since the earliest days of the nation, enacting the first veterans' pension law in 1789. As the nation grew and successive wars increased the number of veterans, the variety of benefits that were available to veterans continued to develop. In addition, benefits were extended to veterans' dependents and survivors.
Health Care for America’s Heroes: Providing the highest quality care for our brave men and women of the Armed Forces is a top priority. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is seen by some as providing one of the best health care systems in the country. A failure to provide the absolute best to even one veteran or current service member is inexcusable. To provide this care, the VA must be given the proper tools and adequate funding to ensure they are utilizing the latest medical technologies and medicines. These facilities must be staffed with the highest qualified doctors and nurses, as well as medical case managers and service member advocates to help ensure that each veteran has access to every available resource provided by the VA. We do not want even one hero to fall through the cracks in bureaucracy.
Continually Providing Benefits for our Nation’s Veterans: The responsibility to care for veterans, spouses, survivors and dependents can last a long time. As the size, scope, and type of health care benefits have evolved over the VA’s many years of existence, organizational and funding changes have been necessary. We must be innovative in the way we deal with the rapid expansion in the number of veterans currently eligible for benefits. This will help ensure access to educational assistance and continued opportunities in our nation’s workforce as well as adequate disability compensation and pension benefits.
