Overview: The Kansas Corporation Commission
began a general investigation into unbundling the State's natural gas
industry in 1999. On February 10, 1999, the commission filed a notice of
inquiry (Docket 99-GIMG-538-GIG) to solicit input from local distribution
companies and other interested parties as to whether retail
unbundling would be appropriate and in the public interest. In October 1999, the
commission decided not to order statewide unbundling at the time, but
invited Midwest Energy, Inc., a customer-owned electric and natural gas utility, to file a request for a pilot choice program for
its residential customers. To date, no request has been made, although Midwest Energy's marketing subsidiary, Midwest United Energy, provides natural gas marketing services for residential and small business customers in Nebraska and Wyoming. |
EIA State Data: In 2005, Kansas had 856,369 residential and 85,638 commercial customers. They consumed 65 and 30 billion cubic feet of natural gas, respectively. The average prices paid for natural gas purchased from local distribution companies (LDCs) by residential and commercial customers were $12.08 and $11.45 per thousand cubic feet, respectively. |
