Retail Unbundling - Rhode Island


Status: The state has no unbundled services for residential customers.


Overview: No retail unbundling programs are available at this time for residential gas customers in Rhode Island. In 2000, New England Gas Company became the sole local distribution company in the state, with the acquisitions of the former Providence Energy Corporation, Valley Resources, Inc. & Subsidiaries, and Fall River Gas Company. The company offers supplier choice to business customers in Rhode Island using at least 500 thousand cubic feet (Mcf) per year (which includes some restaurants and laundromats). The company does offer unbundled service to its residential customers in Massachusetts.


EIA State Data: In 2002, Rhode Island had 219,769 residential and 23,364 commercial customers. They consumed 18 and 11 billion cubic feet of natural gas, respectively. The average prices paid for natural gas purchased from local distribution companies by residential and commercial customers were $11.81 and $10.06 per thousand cubic feet, respectively.
