The Mining Industry of the Future, a collaboration between the U.S. mining industry and the U.S. Department of Energy, Industrial Technologies Program, is working to make the U.S. mining industry the most efficient and advanced in the world.
EPA Coalbed Methane Outreach Program
The Coalbed Methane Outreach Program (CMOP) is a voluntary program aimed at reducing methane emissions from coal mining activities. Our mission is to promote the
profitable recovery and use of coal mine methane (CMM), a greenhouse gas 21 times as
potent as carbon dioxide. By working cooperatively with coal companies and related
industries, CMOP helps to identify and implement methods to use CMM productively. In
turn, these actions mitigate climate change, improve mine safety and productivity,
and result in financial profits.
Since its inception in 1994, CMOP has provided technical assistance to the industry by: (1) evaluating CMM recovery technologies and use options and the project economics for those options; (2) identifying financial mechanisms for project development; (3) providing analyses to assist CMM-project developers; (4) overcoming regulatory, institutional, and technological barriers to implementation; (5) facilitating discussion among industry participants; and (6) providing project-specific technical assistance. In that time, U.S. coal mines have recovered 292 Bcf of gas.
