The primary aluminum industry emits PFCs and CO2 directly from the production process and indirectly emits CO2 from its energy consumption. In 2001, the U.S. industry's direct CO2 emissions were 4.5 TgCO2Eq, and its PFC emissions were 4.0 TgCO2Eq (EPA, 2006). In 2004, those emission rates had dropped to 4.3 and 2.8 TgCO2Eq.
