The last AWWA Research Symposium on Emerging Organic Contaminants was held more than three years ago. A great deal of interest and new work has been generated in the area since then. Regulatory activities are increasing the importance of several organic contaminants. The need for water utility professionals to learn more on the occurrence, treatment, and health effects of these emerging contaminants is growing. Media coverage of these issues has heightened concerns from the public. Utilities are faced with unique challenges regarding analytical methods and treatment options for these unregulated contaminants. This symposium will bring attendees up to date with the status of these contaminants from various perspectives, including regulatory status, novel developments in analytical methods, and risk assessments for human health.
