“You say you want a revolution”: IEA Side Event at Climate Change COP 14

On 10 December, the IEA held a side event at the UN Climate Change Conference in Poznan, Poland. With the theme “You say you want a revolution - energy policy and technology for a sustainable future,” the well-attended event included presentations on the World Energy Outlook 2008, Energy Technology Perspectives, IEA energy efficiency work, and IEA non-Member country outreach activities.

UN Climate Change Conference Side Event Presentation

The WEO 2008 message on the implications for addressing energy-related CO2 emissions within a post-2012 climate policy framework was commended and discussed by a distinguished panel including Vice Minister of Environment Mr. Zaleski (Poland), Mr. de Boer (UNFCCC), Mr. Lalonde (France), Mr. Watson (USA), and Dr. Mathur (India) at a COP14 side event hosted by the EU.

Growing natural gas role in OECD brings benefits, concerns
In an article focusing on pressures in the natural gas market, Ian Cronshaw, head of the IEA energy diversification division, stated that “It’s clear that gas has become the fuel of choice for power generation in the OECD…” He added that gas “does have its advantages: it means the power sector can respond quickly, in short lead times, and gas can deliver significant environmental benefits. But having said that, it raises issues of supply security, and it links the gas and power sectors in a way that we haven’t seen before. It means that if gas prices go up, so do power prices, because gas is the marginal fuel in the mix.”

IEA calls for “Clean Energy New Deal”
At the UN climate talks (COP14) in Poznan, Poland, IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka called for a “clean energy new deal,” saying that countries must act now to develop renewable energies and make traditional energy sources more efficient, such as capturing carbon released by coal-burning power plants.  “It’s not an exaggeration to say the world stands at a crossroads on climate change.  The science is clear – action is urgently needed,” Mr. Tanaka added.
