The Coal Transportation Rate Database

This Coal Transportation Rate Database (CTRDB) adds new data for 2000 and 2001.  The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) Form 580 "interrogatories" are the primary source for the CTRD.  The FERC Form 580 receives data for coal deliveries to non-jurisdictional utilities, concentrated in several States.  In those areas, the CTRDB is supplemented with general rate, distance, and tonnage data from the Department of Transportation, Surface Transportation Board (STB), based on waybill samples.  Confidential transportation rate or mine rate data (f.o.b. mine value) are entered as zeroes in the database. Confidential rate data are withheld upon respondent request throughout the CTRDB per FERC and STB policy to protect sensitive data whose disclosure may cause competitive harm.

In order to facilitate downloading and processing, the CTRDB is saved as two compatible Excel file modules--one containing all data for the years 1979 through 1992 and the other all data for 1993 through 2001. Access the database by using either or both of the self-extracting zip files, 79_92CTRDB.exe or 93_01CTRDB.exe. The zip files open the CTRDB modules in Microsoft Excel and a Readme file in Microsoft Word.  Each module requires approximately 13 MB of space. To expand the file, click on the file name ("79_92CTRDB" or "93_01CTRDB"). This will bring up the "Save As" dialog box. Save the file 79_92CTRDB.exe or 93_01CTRDB.exe in a directory of your choice, and then double-click on it to expand the Excel and Word files, "CTRDB79_92public.xls" or "CTRDB93_01public.xls," and "READMEpublic.doc."
