Drake Well

Drake well.

"Colonel" Edwin L. Drake (right) and his good friend Peter Wilson, a Titusville pharmacist, in front of the historic Drake well in 1861. This was the second derrick and engine house - the first one burned down in 1859. Photo by renowned oilfield photographer John A. Mather, courtesy of the Drake Well Museum, Titusville.

The Drake well was drilled to 69 and 1/2 feet in 1859 to become the world's first commercial oil well. The Drake Well Museum and Oil Creek State Park can be visited in Venango County, Pennsylvania.
