New Mexico business-owners and entrepreneurs often ask me about resources that might be available to help them succeed, or they contact me about problems they’re having with federal government. As a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, I'm also frequently contacted about business issues important to New Mexicans. If you are having difficulty with a federal agency, we might be able to help.

Where to go for General Business Help
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is a helpful resource. It offers assistance with planning your business, starting your business, managing your business, and closing your businesses. TheUS Department of Labor is another useful source, which provides Elaws: Employment Laws Assistance for Workers and Small Business. This can assist you with pay and benefits, youth employment, safety and health, and more.
You can also take courses from The American Institute of Small Business (AISB). “AISB is the largest licensed school in the country focused on small business success. The mission of the institute is to teach proven techniques to potential and current small business owners that are necessary to successfully start and run a business.”
What do I need to know about Business and Immigration?
The USCIS Office of Business Liaison is a helpful source of information. They offer information on the employment eligibility verification process, as well as the opportunities available to employers to hire and/or "sponsor" foreign workers.
If you are an employer in the U.S., this Handbook for Employers (PDF) provides a step-by-step explanation of what you as an employer must do to meet your responsibilities under the law.
You can also find Employment Authorization Documents and Applications on the USCIS website.
There are many helpful resources available to you on the World Wide Web regarding Business. Here is a small sampling of links that contain useful information. We encourage you to search the web for other resources as well.
