Press Release
Groundbreaking Ceremony held for Veterans Memorial Project
December 8, 2008

CARROLLTON – Denton County held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Veterans Memorial Project on the morning of Dec. 6 at the Sandy Jacobs Government Center in Carrollton.

The Veterans Memorial Project is designed to become a place for citizens and their families to honor America’s soldiers of past, present and future.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by several dignitaries including Congressman Kenny Marchant, representatives from state Senators Chris Harris and Jane Nelson, Denton County Commissioner Ron Marchant, City of Carrollton Mayor Ron Branson, and several Carrollton City council members.

“This memorial is dedicated to all the veterans who have bravely served and sacrificed for our country,” said Marchant.  “It is my hope that this memorial becomes not only a place to honor our veterans, but also a place of healing for our veterans and their families.”

J.C. Banks and Hobart Marchant, both World War II veterans, were also recognized at the ceremony.  Mr. Banks was at Pearl Harbor during the attacks on Dec. 7, 1941 and both Mr. Banks and Mr. Marchant served in the military throughout the war.

The ceremony was initiated with the presentation of colors by the Carrollton Police Department Honor Guard followed by the national anthem, conducted by the Hebron High School a capella ensemble.

The benediction was presented by Captain Stan Seat.
