Ex-U.N. official gets 8 years for graft

NEW YORK, April 2 (UPI) -- A federal judge in New York sentenced a former U.N. official to eight years for taking kickbacks from a friend in exchange for $100 million in U.N. contracts.
U.S. District Judge Thomas Griesa called the case against Sanjaya Bahel a "tragedy" but rejected appeals for leniency, the New York Post said Wednesday.
"We all wish it had never occurred, but it did occur and the reason is Mr. Bahel," the judge said at Tuesday's hearing.
Bahel, an Indian citizen, had been the procurement chief at the United Nations and was charged with steering information technology contracts to companies controlled by a friend in exchange for a cut of the proceeds, lavish gifts and a steep discount on a luxury condo in Manhattan.
The Post noted that Bahel's wife now faces deportation while her husband does his time in the United States.
