Top UN Official Threatens U.S. Ambassador for investigating illicit UN program in North Korea

Ad Melkert of the UN Development Program

The number two official at the UN Development Program (UNDP), Ad Melkert, recently resorted to unveiled threats of retaliation against the U.S. Mission to the UN for bringing transparency to illicit UN activities in North Korea.  The threats were issued after the U.S. Mission produced evidence that the UN has, among other things, passed cash directly to the state sponsor of terror.

Melkert is a former World Bank official who was part of the recent campaign to oust Paul Wolfowitz from the World Bank.  This campaign against Wolfowitz began after the U.S. Mission first went public with evidence that Melkert’s UNDP was illicitly transferring cash to Kim Jong-Il.  To date, Melkert has been in a state of denial and defense of his UNDP programs in North Korea and other regimes.  It is not yet known if Melkert issued the same threats to Wolfowitz who, like the U.S. Mission to the UN, attempted to fight corruption at and bring transparency to the World Bank

Key Facts:

  • The U.S. taxpayer is a top contributor to the UN Development program--in 2005, contributing $247 million.
  • Reports indicate the United Nations has transferred up to $100 million to state sponsor of terror, North Korea while also providing dual use technology that can enhance North Korea's missile program.
  • Reports indicate the United Nations transfers cash and resources directly to other state sponsors of terror and regimes including Burma, Syria, and Cuba.
