The 2008 Congressional Art Competition

If you are a young person with interests and talents in the arts, or know someone who is, you should be aware of an exciting opportunity available now for young artists.

High school students in the First Congressional District can earn the chance to have their artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol, receive a trip to Washington D.C., and win a scholarship to a prestigious art school through the 2008 Congressional Art Competition.

Founded in 1982, the Congressional Art Competition is sponsored annually by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. It provides members of Congress the opportunity to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since it began, more than 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.

The 2008 competition is open to all high school students, and students may submit original artwork in various categories including paintings, drawings, collage, prints, mixed media, computer generated art, and photography.

The theme for entries of First District students this year is “Nebraska History.”  Entries must be submitted to my district offices by May 1, 2008, and the winner will be selected by a committee in my district office.

The winning artwork will be displayed in the Cannon Building of the nation’s Capitol for one year.  The winner and two family members will be eligible for three roundtrip airline tickets to attend the art competition ceremony in Washington D.C. and to view the artwork on display.  The winner may also be eligible for a $5,000 Artistic Honors Scholarship to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Specific guidelines can be found at http://www.house.gov/house/ArtGuidelines.shtml.  You may also contact my Lincoln District Office to request more information at 402-438-1598.  Remember, the deadline is May 1 to submit artwork for this unique opportunity!
