Sen. Cornyn Lauds Valley Leaders For Proactive Economic Growth Efforts

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

PHARR—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn today visited Mission to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Workforce Solutions’ newest facility, the Hidalgo County Workforce Solutions Center. Sen. Cornyn was joined by Hidalgo County Judge J.D. Salinas, Mission Mayor Norberto Salinas, and Workforce Solutions Board Chairman Sam Vale. Later in the day, Sen. Cornyn delivered the keynote address at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge Northbound Lane Expansion. Sen. Cornyn was joined by Pharr Mayor Leo “Polo” Palacios, Master of Ceremonies Hollis Rutledge, several Pharr City Commissioners, and Bridge Board Members. Sen. Cornyn was instrumental in securing $1 million in federal funding for the development of the new lanes.

“I was pleased to join local mayors, community and business leaders today to celebrate the launch of two exciting developments in the Rio Grande Valley that are sure to be a boon to the local economy. As our national economy faces serious hurdles, I am glad to see communities in Texas are taking responsibility over their economic futures and spearheading pro-growth initiatives like the Hidalgo County Workforce Solutions Center and the newly expanded lanes on the Pharr International Bridge,” Sen. Cornyn said. “By training men and women for jobs in manufacturing and construction, Workforce Solutions is making a positive difference in the community with the opening of their new center in Hidalgo County. I have been a strong supporter of Workforce Solutions’ mission to create opportunity through their centers across Texas, and I was pleased to announce nearly $2 million in federal funding today for their continued efforts.

“With the newly completed lane expansion on the Pharr International Bridge, the Valley’s already successful trade industry is sure to become even more competitive. At the same time, businesses and travelers will benefit from reduced waiting times and more efficient travel. I reiterated my strong support for infrastructure improvements such as those on the Pharr Bridge and announced I will be reintroducing the Emergency Port of Entry Act in the 111th Congress to encourage further trade and more efficient travel in the region.”
