SENATOR COCHRAN PARTICIPATES IN "READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY"

Washington, D.C. -- Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) participated in "Read Across America Day" by reading "The Cat in the Hat" by Dr. Seuss and other favorite stories to twelve 4-year-olds from the Senate Employees' Child Care Center in his Washington, D.C. office.

Four years ago, Congress adopted a resolution establishing March 2 as "Read Across America Day" to highlight the importance of teaching strong reading skills and to demonstrate the value in taking time to read to children. The date commemorates the birthday of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, whose books have been enjoyed by children and adults for many years.

"Read Across America day provides an opportunity each year to inspire children to read and remind adults about the importance of taking an active role in a child's reading instruction," said Cochran, who was an original cosponsor of the reading resolution.

This year more than 25 million children and adults will take part in Read Across America activities nationwide.

Cochran said, "Parents, teachers and children must work together in our homes, schools and communities to encourage successful reading skills which will enable children to meet life's challenges with confidence."
