SENATOR THAD COCHRAN (R-MS) COMMENTS ON THE PRESIDENT'S STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

"I think the President did what he had to do in terms of talking about the importance of waging peace aggressively. He is really not anxious to get us into a war, but he realizes that there are serious threats in the world today – Iraq with weapons of mass destruction and other countries that are capable of developing weapons of mass destruction. We have to make sure that we are a force for peace and stability in the world, and that we're prepared to defend freedom and the security of the American people. So, I'm pleased with the way he handled that issue and spelled out the facts for the American people and for the world.

Also, I'm pleased that he is taking an aggressive stance on the economy – telling us the steps that are necessary to get our economy growing again, and to try to control federal spending as a part of that. Also, to create some tax incentives, so that people will save and invest, that businesses can start and flourish, so we can create the jobs that the American people need.

On the subject of health care, I was pleased to hear about his ideas for modernizing Medicare, including a prescription drug benefit. I think that is important. And so is encouraging compassion in our communities, by providing incentives for faith-based initiatives to help people who are down on their luck who need the help of the community.

These are things that I think were the highlights as far as I'm concerned, and I think the President is showing strong leadership."
