Digital Television

   Date: 10/08/2008

The Basics

As you may know, on February 17, 2009, television stations will begin broadcasting exclusively in a digital format.  On that day, TVs that normally get their broadcast - or "free" - television signal over the air will see only static, unless they are attached to the appropriate digital TV converter box and, in many cases, an antenna. Those who get their TV through cable, satellite, or other telecommunications provider will not be affected.

The Antenna Dilemma

While a good deal of information has been given to the public regarding the transition generally, very little of the public awareness campaign has focused on the fact that millions of Americans' TVs will go dark if they do not adjust their existing antenna or purchase a new one.  With winter fast approaching, there is no time for Vermonters to wait to make sure they are ready for the Digital TV Transition on February 17th.  Now is the time to get started.  For more information on what you need to do, click here. For a list of companies Vermonters can contact which provide this equipment and/or installation, click here.

Federal Coupon Program

To help consumers pay for these convertor boxes, the federal government has created a coupon program or call the 24-hour hotline at 1-888-388-2009 .  Each household may obtain up to two $40 coupons to help pay the cost of converter boxes so you can use your current televisions to watch the new digital picture.

Information and Assistance

For more information on the digital television transition and how to get your Converter Box Coupon, you may call the 24-hour hotline at 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009) or visit www.dtv2009.gov.  Hearing-impaired consumers can use their TTY service by dialing 1-877-530-2634.  Converter boxes can be purchased at most national retailers, over the phone, and online.  Vermonters who now enjoy Canadian TV programs will need to make sure they buy a converter box with "analog pass-through capabilities" and should read more here.
