Dear Friends:

I appreciate your reading the Lugar Letter and news of my activities in Washington, D.C., and Indiana on behalf of Hoosiers.

The month of September was highlighted by events in Portland and Marion, Indiana, to celebrate the grand opening of two new ethanol plants.

In addition, we had another opportunity to demonstrate the importance of health and fitness in the 29th annual Dick Lugar Community Run, Walk at Butler University and annual Health Fair in the ArtsGarden at Circle Centre Mall. I was impressed with the hundreds of Hoosiers who participated in the 5K run/walk and especially our four Lugar Health and Fitness Award winners, who have made significant contributions to health or fitness awareness and education in Indiana.

As many Americans have been captivated in the last week by Ken Burns’ new historic documentary, The War, I wanted to mention the supporting role of the Veterans History Project which records the stories of veterans from World War II through Korea, Vietnam and now the conflict in Iraq. As Ken Burns and I wrote in a recent letter to Indiana newspapers, "This film is as much about storytelling and sharing unique experiences as it is about World War II, and as such we hope that it touches on the universal human experience of patriotic sacrifice."

The new documentary reminds us of the importance of collecting the oral histories of the men and women who have served in our military. Nearly 8,000 stories from Hoosier veterans are preserved at the Library of Congress, and I encourage all veterans to share their memories. Veterans interested in participating in the Veterans History Project should contact my Indianapolis Office at (317) 226-5555 or by email at vetproject@lugar.senate.gov.

Sincerely,
