Domestic violence and abuse is a staggering problem that confronts our friends and neighbors all across the nation. No race, no social group, nor any ethnic group is safe from the threat of domestic violence. Anyone, from any educational or economic background, people of all ages, religions, and cultures are susceptible to the physical, mental, and emotional anguish associated with domestic violence.
Did you know that children under the age of 12 lived in 43% of the households in which domestic violence occurred? According to studies by the American Psychological Association one in three women will be physically assaulted in adulthood.
It’s obvious that we face a significant battle. But our crusade against domestic abuse must extend beyond the safety of shelters and beyond the halls of the legislature. It must reach into our communities and our homes, and the most potent weapon in this crusade is our voice.
You and I must speak out against domestic violence and raise awareness within our individual neighborhoods of the threats from domestic violence to the strength of our families and our communities.
If you or someone you know has been sexually, physically, or emotionally abused, please seek help for yourself or take the hand of your loved one and reach out for support or counseling.
