Dear Friends:

I am pleased that you continue to read The Lugar Letter and follow my activities in the U.S. Senate.  I especially appreciated many recent comments about my June 25th Senate speech on Iraq.  Needless to say, the debate continues with intensity as we work with our colleagues to bring about a change in the war we are fighting in Iraq and a host of other current foreign policy dilemmas.

During the month of July, I appreciated many opportunities to visit with Hoosiers while in Indiana.  On Saturday, July 14, I visited Integrity Biofuels in Morristown, Indiana, central Indiana’s first biodiesel production plant, to tour their facilities and present a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol Building in recognition of Integrity Biofuel’s contribution to our nation’s energy security.  Our next stop was the GasAmerica truck stop located at I-70 and State Road 109 in Knightstown which operates the first B10 pump in Indiana, and where I presented the July 2007 Lugar Energy Patriot Award.

On Saturday, July 21, I participated in the annual tradition of the United Way Volunteer Breakfast and toured the health fair as part of the Indiana Black Expo.  Each year, this Summer Celebration provides an exciting opportunity for Indiana to share the historical and cultural richness of the African-American community.  The following Monday, I welcomed Hoosier attendees to Washington, D.C. for the African American Leadership Summit.  I was especially grateful for this delegation of Hoosiers, and the opportunity for these leaders to participate in our policy dialogue.

In the coming month, I look forward to commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Nunn-Lugar program in Moscow, Russia.

As always, I am eager to hear your views and appreciate your interest in my work.  Please stay closely in touch.

Sincerely,

Dick Lugar

Did You Know? The Automotive X PRIZE (AXP) is an international competition to design an energy efficient vehicle that can be mass produced. Thirty-one teams have already signed a letter of intent to compete in the competition and more than 300 are actively considering entry. On February 5, 2006, the Indianapolis Star published an op-ed by Senator Lugar calling for Indiana to harness its historic leadership in automotive technology and innovation and lead the auto-tech boom of the 21st century to address fuel efficiency and reduce reliance on foreign oil.
