Where You Live

Schools share the responsibility of not only educating our young people, but also keeping them safe. There are many dangers in schools, but some may not be easily detected. Mercury, used in many common items found in schools, is one of these so-called hidden dangers. To help schools safely find, manage, and dispose of their mercury, EPA, states, and local communities have developed a number of educational videos:

Keep Your Paws Off Mercury

Clancy the Mercury Detecting Dog, EPA, and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency teamed up to create the Keep Your Paws Off Mercury campaign to teach students across the country about mercury and its dangers. The cornerstone of the Keep Your Paws Off Mercury campaign is an educational video that shows students where mercury can be found in schools and what to do if they see it. We have presented the video in two different formats:

NOTE: Download times for the videos may vary depending on the speed of your Web connection and other factors.

Poster of Clancy, the Mercury Detecting Dog - Keep Your Paws Off Mercury (PDF) (1 pg, 455K, About PDF) - will print out on 8 1/2" x 11" size paper

You can order copies of the video and/or poster free of charge from the National Service Center for Environmental Publications (NSCEP).

Follow these steps when responding to a mercury spill:
  1. Stay calm.
  2. Don't touch the mercury.
  3. Tell students to avoid the spill and leave the room.
  4. Open the windows.
  5. Leave the room.
  6. Close the door.
  7. Notify school administration of the spill.
  8. Call the emergency contact. State and regional information.

Through this campaign, we hope everyone will help Clancy get mercury out of our schools and the environment. Protect yourself and the environment - keep your paws off mercury! More information on Clancy and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's Mercury Free Zone Exit EPA
