Bayh Proposes Renaming Local Post Office in Honor of Congresswoman Julia Carson

Washington-- Senator Evan Bayh announced today that he will introduce legislation to rename the Mapleton Station Post Office in Indianapolis to the Julia M. Carson Post Office, in honor of the late congresswoman.

Located at 2650 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street, Carson was successful in advocating for the construction of the new Mapleton Station Post Office, which opened on July 15, 2005, and she attended the dedication ceremony for the building on Aug. 11, 2005.

“Julia Carson was a trailblazer who made history,” Senator Bayh said. “In her life, she often faced daunting odds, but she never lost sight of her devotion to helping others. Just as she was inspired by her own heroes, Julia inspired those around her with the belief that we could do more and should do more in the fight for what is right and just.

"It’s more than fitting that we honor her in this way – at an address that already honors one of her heroes, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.– with a permanent reminder of her life’s work on behalf of the people of Indianapolis and our great state.”

Bayh will introduce the legislation to rename the post office building when the Senate reconvenes on Tuesday. Senator Richard Lugar has agreed to cosponsor the bill.

Carson passed away on Dec. 15. She served the people of Indiana in public office for more than 35 years as a member of the state House of Representatives, state Senate and Center Township Trustee. She was elected in 1996 to the first of six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
