Denver, CO – United States Senator and Agriculture Committee member, Ken Salazar, announced the first round of his Farm Bill listening sessions across Colorado. Senator Salazar will hold listening sessions in advance of Senate work on the 2007 Farm Bill. The goal of the sessions is to listen to the needs of Colorado farmers, ranchers and rural communities to help address those needs when the Senate acts on the Farm Bill reauthorization. Senator Salazar’s listening sessions are already scheduled for Monte Vista, Burlington, Yuma, Sterling, Grand Junction and Adams County. Senator Salazar’s listening sessions are the first step in a process to gather information for the 07’ Farm Bill that will take several months. Senator Salazar will hold additional Farm Bill listening sessions in other parts of the state. “The farmers and ranchers who provide the bountiful foods on our Nation’s dinner tables everyday know best what they need to get their jobs done. The upcoming reauthorization of the Farm Bill will have a major impact on the ability of family farms to survive and prosper instead of seeing their livelihoods and communities wither on the vine,” said Senator Salazar. “I am holding these listening sessions to listen to the farmers and ranchers so that I can be a strong voice for rural Colorado as the Senate debates this important legislation.” Many of the issues expected to be of paramount importance to farmers and ranchers include funding for disaster mitigation programs, drought relief, commodity support, bio-fuels investments and trade issues.
