Military and Veterans Section

Every day, we honor the service men and women who volunteer to protect our nation both while they wear our country's uniform and after they return to civilian life. These Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen have our utmost respect and appreciation. I am committed to providing our military with the resources it needs to accomplish its mission, as well as with first-class benefits and pay to facilitate recruitment and retention of our all volunteer force.

Our servicemen and veterans deserve the very best healthcare facilities and comprehensive coverage provided locally, without the backlogs and waiting times too often associated with military and veterans' medical centers.

I also have...

  • Supported the 2008 Consolidated Appropriations Act that provided the largest increase in veterans' spending in the history of the United States, dedicating $43.1 billion for veterans' programs -- $3.7 billion above the President's proposal -- including increases for medical services and facilities, construction of hospitals and clinics, prosthetic research, and more;

  • Co-sponsored a bill that would bar TRICARE fee increases and would prevent offsets of survivor's benefits under the Survivor Benefits Plan (SBP) by amounts received in veteran's dependency and indemnity compensation;

  • Co-sponsored the the Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act or New GI Bill, which helps veterans adjust to civilian life with quality educational benefits that are comparable to those provided to World War II veterans;

  • Co-sponsored amendments to the Defense Authorization bill that would strengthen the authority of the National Guard to ensure it can perform its domestic and overseas missions as effectively as possible; extend the time limit for the Reservists' use of their entitlement to educational assistance; and makes the National Guard Commander a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff;

  • Urged the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to allow veterans in Western Maryland who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder to continue to seek treatment either from their current provider, and

  • Led the bipartisan effort to grant a federal charter to the Korean War Veterans Association that recognizes the nearly 1.2 million American veterans of the Korean War, honoring the sacrifice they made for our nation.
