In 1985, as the Ranking Republican of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Senator Lugar joined with Indiana Farm Bureau to sponsor a youth essay contest for 8th grade students which would focus attention on the importance of Indiana agriculture. View photos from a joint project that brought together Senators Lugar's and Bayh's staffs and Hoosier interns as they mailed 400 gift packages to Indiana National Guard members stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan on July 30, 2007.

The packages were sent to unit leaders identified by the Indiana National Guard for distribution at their discretion to individual Guard members.

Senator Lugar was the only currently serving elected official selected to participate in Archbishop Desmond Tutu's project, Hands That Shape Humanity. Bishop Tutu selected 100 individuals from across the globe and asked them one question: If there was only one message of wisdom you could leave behind for humanity, what would it be?

Each participant was photographed, narrated a message on film, portrayed his/her message as a handwritten piece, wrote the most important word on his/her hand, provided handprints in paint and will have their expressive hands cast in bronze.
