Sen. Salazar Congratulates CSU on $3.4 Million Grant to Expand Food Safety Research

DENVER, CO – Today, United States Senator Ken Salazar announced that the Center for Meat Safety and Quality (CMSQ) at Colorado State University (CSU) has been awarded a $3.4 million national grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to support the Center’s research, education and outreach efforts to improve food safety. Specifically, the funding will be used to develop an integrated system that will be used to monitor agricultural water used in vegetable production for the presence of harmful, illness-inducing food-borne pathogens.

“With this funding, the researchers at CSU will play a key role in ensuring that the food produced on American farms meets the safety standards of American families,” said Senator Salazar. “Every day, we are putting the new farm bill to work in ways that benefit not only our farmers, ranchers and rural communities, but also the millions of Americans across the country, young and old, who rely on our nation’s continued ability to produce clean, safe, and affordable food.”

The funding for this grant was made available by the Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) grant program, which was established upon passage of the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008, also known as the 2008 Farm Bill. As a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Senator Salazar was instrumental in securing funding for the SCRI as part of the 2008 Farm Bill.
